Raced the Thames Valley Triathletes’ Concorde Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, based at Bradfield College between Theale and Thatcham. Distances were 400m pool swim, 20+ km cycle, 5km “mixed terrain” run – and equally mixed terrain transitions!
Result: 3rd/219 overall (first podium and trophy!)

After some good run training recently, I’ve been looking for a local 10k road race at which to try to break the 40′ barrier. Simon Haynes put me onto the Yateley 10k Road Race Series, and we arranged to meet up for the final one in the series yesterday.

Last night I popped down to Eastleigh for my first ever aquathlon, with an exorbitant £8.50 entry fee. It’s a series, last Thursdays in the month and this was the third of 5 races.

After feeling like I didn’t do myself justice at Eastleigh a couple of weeks ago, and nervous about stepping up from sprint to Olympic, I decided to treat the build-up/taper with more care before Marlow (intended to be 1500m swim/37km bike/10km run). I did two 1hr brick sessions the Friday and Monday and “pile of brick” race pace intervals on the Tuesday (5 x 5min turbo+1km treadmill) and then just a gentle ride with Jon on Thursday. Combined with eating and drinking well, I actually got to the weekend feeling pretty refreshed. Result!

I love the Emsworth-Basingstoke Relay. It’s 70 km of all the terrain Hampshire can throw at you, right from the coast to within half-a-lunchtime-jog of the Sony office. It’s fab.

I had more-or-less my best result at a triathlon at Salisbury at the weekend, about as good overall as I managed at Wimborne in September 2005 when I was super bike-fit. I’ve done Salisbury Fast Twitch before too and I like the bike and run routes.

Back in 2007 and again in 2009 I raced the Winchester Fast Twitch triathlon, being more or less my most local race. While I’ve been away, Concept Sport seem to have slimmed down the FT series considerably, but up has popped Try Tri Events. Monday was their fourth May Day Tri in Winchester.
